Game Technics (outside gameplay) / Re: Mobile version of mailbox
« on: May 16, 2014, 12:05:10 AM »
Sorry, quick question.

What are some important aspects to a mobile version that you guys are looking for? (Besides an easy access mailbox)

I personally don't ever log on while on-the-go, so it'd be useful to know what others want from a mobile version.

- edit -

nevermind, I just realized there's a separate thread regarding mobile. DERP.

I specifically remember stating that if it were going to be RP of that caliber, that we do it on here, the forums.

Well my bad for forgetting that I read that part of your post >.>

Regardless, bringing it to the forums then automatically ostracizes a portion of people since we all know what happens when we ask others to go to forums for additional RP.

But why not? It's worth a shot anyways.

Had a plot hat would grant the new players a term of being loser to equal to the OP peeps.

But like I said it'll be hat to get people to buy into it.

Grant the new players a term of being loser to equal?

Sorry, i'm not sure I get the phrasing, but I sort of feel like I know what you're trying to say. But yeah, if you have a plot, why not share it? We could always try it, then if worse comes to worse and it doesn't work out, it's not like it's going to harm anyone (or will it? XD).

Maybe we could all play a massive card game or something together. Maybe read a common story together. Maybe just have some RP on here not related to the SL site. Distribute and read sketchy materials Ya know, bond.

We hardly even have discussions over the newest chapters anymore.  :(

Trying to have a massive site-wide thing might get a bit crazy. I remember when Chu was having his wedding in Suna a long while back and a buttload of people were invited, people were posting so fast in the village square that it almost became chaotic. Fun, but still a bit overwhelming nonetheless. :D

"It used to be better!"
Have a good long think about how the 'golden days' you lot seem to consistently reminisce about took place when Kishi hadn't introduced the plethora of admittedly-OP concepts and abilities so commonly utilized today. Those 'golden days' will never come back, there can be 'silver days', but they'd never live up to the past's rendition.

I think this has already been addressed. The past is the past. Obviously you can't bring back the beginning generation of players, so we have to adapt to the newer generation.

"New Players Suck!"
New players feel like they need a head start. Well, maybe we ought to direct them to a page here that explains how you need to build your character over time and with RP.
Maybe we ought to be more strict, forcing people to have witnesses to them getting and claiming things so that people don't just meta-take stuff. Maybe we should show them the ropes instead of stepping on them because they suck. If you don't want to do that, then don't complain about new players. End of story.

I think some new players feel the need to have a head start due to the fact that half the site seems to recognize people based upon their RP abilities, while others mainly attribute power --> resets. So while you can be an amazing rp'er, let's be honest, lots of people tend to disregard acads and genins and only seem to take them seriously when they have custom names or something. I'm not saying all do, but that seems to be the mindset of some from what i've seen. That's also taking into account if we're just solely talking about fighting.

Perhaps trying to cultivate a sense of just regular chatting and coming up with fun alternative story lines that can range from exploring to even mundane activities can help foster new players' creativity, which would in turn hopefully bleed into their fighting skills.

"There's No Community!"
Maybe because we're all jerks to each other whenever we try to have a discussion about anything? How about we try and prevent discussions from becoming aggressive and spiteful. Stop each other from being mean when we don't like someone else's opinion. And for god's sake stop with the snide, snarky comments that make you feel cool and tough and tuff and kewl. Nobody on SL has ever taken one of your rude and witty comments to heart, and nobody ever should, so just stop. Just grow up and stop.

Haha, I agree with this. I think it kind of boils down to personal character though, so I don't know if you can really force somebody to change how they behave. >_>

"Everyone's Lazy!"
Lead by example, whether you're a kage or a genin, just choose not to take the easy way. This isn't something we can just "fix" with glue and paint, people are lazy because we let them get lazy, because we wanted to get lazy too.
I'm lazy. I'm the laziest person here. I bought my account, I just claimed random stuff that I made up, I don't have a consistent story for my character, and I never commit to a single thing.

Hehe, this kind of contradicts your 'prevent people from getting/claiming random things', but I know what you were trying to get across.

I think some things that could help this would be to have strong leadership (whether that be the clan leader or upper members, etc.) to try and create content for others to participate in. Most people will be lazy, but I think if somebody does the work for laying the basis of a new mission, then players would want to participate in them. Once again though, you gotta get that first person to consistently create that content, which is tough since that's almost a job in and of itself, and we all have lives outside of this site (I think XD)

So a lot of people have said a lot of things, and a lot of things has mostly been "It used to be better, no community, new players suck, everyone's lazy"
But I knew all that about SL. And I know everything there is to know about the common cold except for a cure. Does that help me when I'm sick?
What I'm trying to say is good job everybody for pointing out stuff we all pretty much know, so does anyone have any suggestions or ideas as to what we should do about it?

So is this thread turning into one from "what do you think is a legend/what are your goals" into a thread regarding "how do we try and improve the site?"

If that's the case, that's a whole other can of worms to open. While I do like to reminisce about times of old, I do agree that you can't get back what was then so you can only try and work on making it better for the present. What I was trying to say is that it will be difficult to come to a consensus due to the shift in people who are on the site and also the way that the manga has progressed.

There's always room to try and make the site better (or at least more welcoming and inclusive), but the hard part is coming up with suggestions and trying to get a majority of people to get on board with them.

What would you suggest Sabu?

To me, what constitutes a legend would be someone who is remembered, whether that be in a good or bad way.

Mods from the old days were legends simply because there was a mixture of administrative and communal presence. They posted in the main village areas, interacted with other people, and generally did their job which helped bolster their visibility.

Other legends were people who were active in RP. Shigeo, Kirk, Camel, Rai, Ranketsu, Zenaku, Kayenta, Bocc, Cmage, Yumei, Gyururu, Tommi, Tracey, etc. etc. the list goes on and on. They've come in waves, some have stuck around and some have left due to growing too busy with real life and responsibilities, however they've all helped progress and stimulate RP in their own ways, which is pretty awesome.

I think people with high dk's and pvp's are legends as well. People like Konoho, Destinysforbidden, gyururu, bludtaino, louie, dodo, etc. With my sitter that I created years and years ago, I used to look up to the pvp'ers and think "damn, i'm never going to catch up!" Haha, in the end I didn't really, and only surpassed a few of them, but they gave me a goal to strive for nonetheless.

Like what most others have stated already, there aren't too many goals nowadays to reach for besides getting KG for some people, but that's just one dimension of the game that not everyone really cares to go for.

I think the progression of the anime and the way the techniques spiraled into an abyss of ridiculousness caused the RP to follow. Many people nowadays are more concerned with "being the best"/"being better than you" to the point where nobody wants to get hit because they think losing equates to being a bad rp'er. It is tough though, as previously mentioned getting hit once pretty much spells a death sentence to most due to the insta-kill kind of techniques people bust out every turn. But if people willingly go into RP fights with the mindset that they don't want their character to ever die, then they'll more than likely never take hits no matter how well placed/magnitude of an attack. Yet it's also hard to give up a character that you put years of work and effort into developing. It's a tough situation no matter how you look at it. I think the gif Tracey put summed everything up nicely. XD

SL has pretty much plateaued in a sense, because people think that promoting rp always has to be in the form of a war or fighting, yet when/if a war ever happens it turns into a clusterfack of ooc and uncivil fights. Soooo my personal goals nowadays are geared more towards keeping up some friendships from SL via skype or fb, and focusing on work IRL. I like to check back once a week or so via alts, but my drive is no longer here tbh.

But yeahhhhh, this ended up way too long so i'll stop rambling. It's getting late and i'll probably regret this post when I wake up. Bahaha  o_o

Exist, yes. Though, we use the term active rather loosely sometimes.  :P

Ain't that the truth. o_o  But yeah, welcome back to SL and enjoy all the new things that have been added, changed, updated, etc.! Or at the very least enjoy the nostalgia. >w<

It's been months, and I have to wonder if you guys are no longer creating an Oto/Oro skin for SL.

No, that has been my fault. I got slammed with a large project at work and was halted in my progress for the Oto skin. I have not forgotten it, just haven't gotten around to finish what I as working on. I'll try to finish up and test what I have when I fly back home tomorrow (i'm on a business trip currently), but I'll need to email it to Neji before it gets approved.  My apologies

Or you can debuff Jukai Kotan  ;)

But in all seriousness, I don't use the elemental KG at all so I don't have a valid say in the matter since I rely mostly on the doujutsu-based techniques (sharingan, rin'negan, etc.). Each KG within their category are supposed to be as balanced yet unique from each other, so making it more and more like Senju's moves would essentially lose that difference in variety.

Since i'm not familiar with the Hyouton moveset, i'm assuming it only lasts 1 round but is super powerful. Making it last a couple of rounds may not be too bad (as you suggested), or perhaps lowering its chakra cost may be an option as well, though I don't even know how much it costs. Unfortunately it probably wouldn't be a priority on Neji's list to update since it's not that popular a KG set assuming he even looks at this thread, but it might not be a complete lost cause seeing as how Hyuuga may possibly be getting an update (but that was a WIP/issue since forever). Don't get your hopes up though. XD

Village Square / Re: Official rules of Edo Tensei
« on: June 06, 2013, 08:52:50 PM »
I can agree to most of those rules except "If an Edo summoning is sealed or captured, the user takes on 25% of the damage the Edo Tensei received." I don't really know how that would work, care to explain? I personally don't think one should take damage if there Edo is sealed, as Rakudo said, it's odd.

I don't know how it would work

Also, no ratio rule or teacher-student?

I also agree that taking damage once an Edo Tensei is sealed or captured doesn't make sense. I think if you're careless enough to get one of your Edo Tensei captured/sealed permanently, then that in itself is a downside since you're losing a specific character that can never be used again.

Plus if Edo Tensei are pretty much invulnerable, how do you even calculate 25% of potentially infinite damage? What if the Edo Tensei had been blown up multiple times by say... a bakuton technique, but reformed each time then eventually got trapped/sealed. How would 25% of being blown up relate to the damage the summoner takes? (sorry that's kind of an extreme example hehe).

I would think losing chakra would make more sense than damage, but then again, I don't have the best insight on balancing techniques.  :o

So here's my stance, I rather go with a quarter-percentage of chakra costs rather then ten-percentage or better yet how about you give me a percentage to work with, Purple.

Mind. Blown.

But on the topic of this discussion, I think that having a "limit" of 6 edo tensei summons is barely even considered a limit at all. Edo tensei summons are essentially a pool of infinite chakra. When there are people who kill off their characters, name change the account to something else and kill it off again, they can keep making new edo tensei with stacks of resets without actually having to make new fresh accounts while the user behind said account is the same. They can make whatever characters they like without having to actually go through the time and effort to kill others, and can have an army of summonable crazy powerful characters at their fingertips even though it's all coming from one account.

Now if 2 people go into battle, but have 6 edo tensei each, that's essentially an army of 14 people being controlled by only 2 users (12 of which will never die or get exhausted).

I'm glad that other teams got some of their spotlight... Except for poor Lee and Ten-ten. But yeah, I guess Sasuke could still summon snakes alongside birds then? That confused me slightly. And when did Gamakichi get big enough to cause a scene?

And did anyone else find the gag on page 20 hilarious?

Yeah, that confused me a bit. I was always under the impression that you can only have 1 summoning contract at a time, and the only reason why Sasuke got hawks was because Manda was dead and so he was free to sign another contract. But if he can still summon snakes, it could either mean that he gave up hawks to summon snakes again, or you really can have multiple contracts but just can summon them simultaneously (unless you have a Rin'negan). Hurray for ambiguities that will never be solved or expanded upon!

If it is just summon the two animals but at different times, I would imagine that the animal you attempt to sign a contract with may have issues with you having multiple contracts. Kind of similar to how different masters of stuff (like martial arts, japanese drumming, etc.) may get offended if you ask to become their student when you already have trained with other masters.

But then again, Sasuke is the only one (besides Pein) shown to ever summon more than one type of animal and Kishimoto has an uber boner for him sooooooo
