To let him know of my username on SL should I just put in a letter in the envelope to mention my username?

Yes, the address is correct.

If you don't forget your username, all should work out.

Don't send coins, it will raise the risk to your sending.
Also wrap some thick white or dark paper around it to make it not that obvious =)

I've send some money before via mail, a couple of times actually and it went well.
