i remember hearing about the movie but werent they just parallel universes?besides the author did get some inspiration for some parts of the series from world war 2.

Basically, the universe where alchemy is, is a universe where science wasnt developed, and a "magic" was mastered

Time period = early 1900's, around time of hitler's rise to power

In the movie they got sent to teh side where science existed and what we knew as modern times during the industrialized 1900's

I liked in the Movie when Hughes comes by that shop place that Ed is in and salutes and says Heil Hitler, then the guys inside the shop say it. lulz, Hughes is a nazi.
