Actually, the United States government along with other countries and organizations have certain strands of viruses that if they introduce into a small population, could spread and be so devastating that it would cause the world to lose a large percentage of it's population. Add that in with bio-chemical weaponry, as well as nuclear weapons, and we actually could simply wipe all life off the planet as we know it, leaving only those organisms capable of chemosynthetic trophism, as well as other remote deep sea dwelling creatures that do not require the energy of the sun in any way whatsoever.
