I believe that self-infliction via your own jutsu really depends on the intensity of it's destruction, and it's general overall nature and intent.

Sasuke's Chidori Current. It's meant to be released from the user's body in order to incapacitate nearby opponents/targets via temporary paralysis. Yet this doesn't mean that Sasuke is essentially paralyzing himself while doing so.

Sasuke can evolve this into another technique, the Sword of Kusanagi: Chidori Katana.

Though I am certain, that if Sasuke were to somehow screw up and impale himself while using the technique, he would probably paralyze himself until he released the chakra flow into the blade.

And as mentioned earlier, the Third Raikage's Hell Stab One Finger-Nukite is touted as the strongest spear. But because of how dangerous the technique is, it can hurt the user.

Even the Truth-Seeking Balls can hurt their own user, if the intent is there.

At first it may seem like all these instances contradict each other in jutsu self-infliction lore. But it all really is based on the situation. Back when Sasuke was training with the Great Fireball Technique, he caused a few minor burns on his cheeks. This is because he was still very clearly training with chakra molding and usage in the first place. You can read the chapter yourself for this.

Now for somebody who can use a technique but has not gained enough experience in the overall molding of their chakra to create it, then it can cause some harm to the user. This is how Sasuke was with his Chidori back when he was still a basic user of it. Even when pouring too much of his chakra into a technique he was still relatively-new with, he was causing his skin to peel and burn.

Skill, purpose, intensity and intent are the four factors to take into consideration. One, skill in chakra molding and usage of the technique. Two, the technique's purpose and effects. Three, the intensity in how powerful it is. And four, the intention of the user.

As for completely tanking elements, that should only be possible when using an elemental chakra mode that corresponds with, or is stronger in the cycle, that the attacking element is.
