So with SL being around for ten years now, I think it's about time that a few small things get updated. Technology has literally advanced ten years since it's conception. 2005 to 2015, and we're on the verge of making VR a thing, with AR already being pretty common for those who can afford it. Let that sink in a bit.
Character limits
Right now, character limits are as follows.
250 for short bios
800 for additional (if I remember correctly)
25 for eye and hair color
250 for posting
25 for custom titles
I believe that these should be expanded a bit now, since even a fine toaster can browse SL now. Heck, a Raspberry Pi ($35 mini-computer) can browse SL faster and easier than a 2005 comp. Here are my proposals for character expansion.
500 for short bios
2000 for additional
50 for eye and hair color
750 for posting (or maybe 1000, but either one will help to spur on RP, which will help to spur activity)
50 for custom titles
Some of these and others I failed to mention are negotiable with the community.
Bio avatar limits
260x260 is the current limit, and has always been. This is fine for back in 2005 when monitors were 1280x960 or anywhere near that resolution. But now the average desktop computer usually has a 1920x1080 monitor. Even smartphones have a greater resolution than 2005 monitors. I believe that a new limit should be put. My suggestion would be 500x500, but even I'm iffy on what a good size would be.
Opinions and other suggestions are open for discussion, which is highly encouraged.

Most limitations are there to reduce spam. Not from lack of technology. >>
Edit:
But I do agree adding more space would be nice. With the number of mods to players, it could easily be spam proof. Detection system usually catches it anyway.
-
I don't see how having a character limit on my posts reduces spam but I am not what you call tech savy either.
However...it would be nice to have the ability to make longer posts. What annoys me to death is timing out before I can manage to finish writing a post or replying to a PM rp...Seeing as we do not have people waiting to get on the server anymore, maybe we could have a longer time out too?
-
I definitely agree that we should get more space for bios and posts and everything else, character limits on post really hinders posting speed and it would just be nice to have more :P
-
I sure can't think of a reason why not to do this. It would be nice.

I second an increased amount of time before timeout. I second it with a capital S.
-
Oh I hadn't thought of that one, that's a really good idea
-
That is a good Idea. I agree with all of this.

We should tackle the problem differently.
Currently, there are 2 fields for bio, a few for "eyecolour" and such stuff.
I'd basically merge that - because you atm no way to i.e. search for eyecolor.
So they make no real sense.
I'd rather merge them into either a big description text (your choice) which can be big.
The length of a custom title can be discussed.
I'd rather have a different char page. I'd make i.e. columns or stuff ;) to make it better readable.

Should edit your bio to this so we could see visually what you mean? >>;

I really suck at layouting ;)

I'm sure it'll look lovely.

A whole revamp for the bio page sounds really cool.

Those suggestions are amazing, however, a 750 or 1000 character limit for posts you will have to increase the timer before the system automatically logs you out. I forget how long that timer is currently but it isn't very long for 750-1000 characters unless you know what you are going to post.
50 for custom titles I can see someone making a 50 character title for most that will solve the problem of having fancy titles without feeling restricted
Neji suggested a separate char page which I like and the test server can be used to see how it will look for this one.
-
Yeah you're right about that, I hadn't considered the time out feature because of the way that I post. But that would also be a nice thing to raise
-
Neji has the seconds of inactivity set to 520 seconds before auto logoff which amounts to about 8.6 mins. So a little under 9.
Am I the only one who writes out their whole post before posting it? (Doesn't like living life on the edge)
-
It depends for me. Sometimes I'll sit down and right out full posts depending on the severity of the fight or how badly I wish to be a stickler for detail, but I usually don't
-
I won't raise the timeout :D makes little sense if you chat up ppl you *think* are on but are not =/
That is a thing to consider, but I can put a warning in place somewhere.

I'm sure that I'm not the only one familiar with the feeling of thinking somebody is taking a while to reply, when they're really timing out/leaving their comp.
Maybe some sort of warning system should be in place if we do have an extended timeout. Like you know how there's either a red or green dot by a person's name in your mailbox that indicates whether or not someone is offline or online? How about a yellow and orange dot that shows their inactivity before going logout red.
Example
0-4 minutes of inactivity since last page load/refresh = green
5-9 = yellow
10-14 = orange
15 = red/offline
This example is based on a 15 minute timeout. If I remember correctly, 10 minutes is the current timeout.

That sounds reasonable to me.
-
people do not log out on purpose?
that seems pretty silly given the frequency that spawns a bad nav.
I just hate losing my post cause it takes me longer to post it than the server allows me to be logged in to write it.

That sounds reasonable though the unfortunate mobile users already take a while to post unless you are just as fast using a mobile keyboard as to a real one. Anyway I like the idea of a warning system telling the user is about to log out due to 'timing out'
-
Telling the user themselves they are about to time out is already in play. Turn on ajax and idle on a screen. At like the 3 mine mark or two or w/e it will show a warning message.
-
So bumping this back up, for the sake of promoting more characters per post at the very least. My original suggestions were 750 or 1000. Spam could be easily reportable to mods, and from there be deleted by them.
-
If I were to write out the entirety of my posting reply on a word doc and then paste it in later i would time out while composing. So I write each post then and there rushing to complete before the time out.
