Hell, Akira (the show that made the US start importing anime) was made in 1989 - 1990.
DBZ, another import that opened the way for other animes was broadcast in America in '96.

They made a bunch of different editions for it though (with better graphics, but the storyline was basically the same.... just more interactive).
