its called genetic engineering

its been done in plants and animals already

they take traits and give them to other species to give them a better chance at survival, for example, crops being made so they grow twice as big and are pest resistant

true.although i was refering more to making interesting new species by combining 2 already existing ones.like an elepahnt the size of a potbelly pig.
