Look at Dragonball (Z) to try to get ideas of what will happen.
DB had a time skip where a lot of people looked different, like NAruto.
Naruto first went Kyuubi (against Haku) in the same way Goku first went Super Sayain (a friend died).
Both series have a perverted hermit. DB has the Turtle Hermit (Roshi), and Naruto has the Toad Hermit (Jiraiya).
Few people died in DBZ to for someone to get stronger, with the exception of Krillin and... um... 16.
