In-game Achievements
« on: April 24, 2012, 06:48:47 AM »

Well, a lot of games have this Achievements. Some good, some not so good or just plain stupid. I am well aware that Neji has no time to code, so I'm simple posting this idea here for feedback and future references. Who knows, maybe a programme would come wandering by and offer his service like how I offered mine. So here are a (growing) list of achievements that I can think of for now. We could probably add a bunch of tropes (from TV Tropes) to the collection if a little more diversity is required/wanted.

As for "I killed a snake with my bare hands", I think that not only should Orochimaru be defeated without a weapon, but also without the usage of any forms of jutsu. I will however contradict myself by saying that Orochimaru can be defeated with a weapon, considering a majority of people like to use custom weapons, or have resets in the Lotus, Kaguya Ichizoku and the Hyuuga Ichizoku where they're all relying on some form of passive melee weaponry (fists - Lotus, palms - Hyuuga, bones - Kaguya). But that's just my two cents.

Thanks for the input. I forgot about those with KG D=

Anyway, these are just ideas being thrown out in the open. I've no idea if the game will be able to track such achievements or not.

If titles such as 'genin' and 'grand kage' can be 'automatically' allocated (accordingly to the quantity of DK's a character possesses), then achievements awarded due to the attaining (or succeeding) of a specified quota (such as 1,000,000 gold for the 'Millionaire' achievement) shouldn't be wholly impossible to code into being.  8)

When I said impossible, I meant things like; how many times you peek together with Jiraiya, how many times you defeat the werewolf, how many times you have been bitten by Baluski. In other words, I'm not sure if encounters with forest events are recorded in the database. I know it's recorded in your Bio, but those records don't run all the way back to your 1st day on SL. Even if it's possible, it might require more than just coding a module for it. Certain things might have to be added to the core system in order to keep count of such events.

As for...

how many times you peek together with Jiraiya, how many times you defeat the werewolf, how many times you have been bitten by Baluski. I

... It can be done (with as you've stated, a few 'additions' to the core system).  ;)

Although I do believe that achievements should be 'customizable/personalized' in numerous aspects; for instance, werewolf kills and forced transfusions aren't really that significant as there's no real method to control how many times either will occur in your character's stead (well, maybe this applies less to the latter example depending on the character's permanent HP at the time...), much unlike how you can choose to 'peek' (and occasionally be beaten up in turn) or save a princess (...and also get killed for it).

I actually like this idea. The problem i foresee is when a person maxes out on multiple things where would these titles be placed? I can see a long list of titles automatically coming from multiple reborn accounts

Getting an achievement wouldn't give you a special title or anything. What I have in mind is an extra tab in the player's bio that the player as well as other players can click on to view the complete list of achievements. Those that have been achieved will light up while the ones that you haven't achieve will be grey out. Note that achievements will remain even after a rebirth. The only way to clear away the records would be to delete you character.

This idea only has two purpose; give players something to aim for or try out, and to show others that you went there and did that. If we can get a list of 50-100 different achievements, it would be nice to give player a little reward for every 10 achievements they make. DP would be nice, since gems, gold and other stuff would simply disappear after a rebirth.

Perhaps each achievement should reward the player with a quantity of DP equivalent to how difficult attaining it would be ('billionaire' would reward the player with more DP than 'millionaire' due to the [obvious] increase in difficulty)? Or perhaps each achievement should be worth a certain amount of 'brownie points', which can be exchanged for prizes like DP, gold and gems (for varying prices, of course)?

No, doing achievements isn't the new way to gain DP without making a donation.

What about using the Hall of Records?

Well, the display method of the Hall of Fame is quite different. Don't display what you do, it display what everybody did. Besides, the hall is meant for greater achievements. The in-game achievements are more like a check list to guide players along as they play the game. (Yeah, I need to refine the list for that purpose.)

It is possible.

Things like "kill a player at level 1 who has 3x the hp as you" would also be possible.

Still, those things might get really heavy. I know World of Warcraft introduced that as a long term motivation for players. ^^

Well, I know you don't want players to become like World of Warcrafters. Sitting in front of their PC 20 hours a day to just get a certain something or achieve a certain something. So the achievements will focus on actually getting players to try out all the game has to offer, and well as acknowledge some of the crazier stuff that players do.

When I saw clan level + rep and then in-game achievements, I asked myself..

"Does Q play WoW? Or is he just following the same boat by coincidence?"
