Well, yeah, I mean at one point the anime had caught up to the manga, which left the anime director with three options:
1. To create filler eps (Ugh, that would have been awful)
2. To take the show off the air temporarily (which would prove troublesome, because then they would have to wait for the anime that replaced it to go off the air to put it back up).
3. To go in a different direction than the manga.
Obviously, he chose #3, which ended up working really well…
I'm also buying the manga, and from what I know, it is still being released in Japan.
