I understand your complaint, I've thought the same thing myself about the amount of experience you receive for defeating multiple bandits.  However, the level at which you face these bandits is the real key,  facing them while you are at level 1 to level 4 will not amount to much experience because they are usually only one level ahead of you.  Plus you have the benefit of your chosen speciality to stop them in their tracks. 
There are few other events that are like this in the game, the greater level you meet these challenges at, the greater the reward.      

In contrast the harder the challenge becomes also

ya i have found that out the hard way. but i like the way that not every one you face lets you get the experience. makes it more challenging.
