 How about a option in the preferences that lets you have an auto set color for speech and a separate one for emote so you don't always have to type in the `! things and such

EX:
auto set color for emote `~                  auto set color for speech `V
`~auto inserted)walks in                     (`V auto inserted) blah blah blah

I it is:

a) some coding involved
