 1 is fine. They aren't too hard to beat anyway.=)

Cant we attempt to fight our sensei? you challenge him anyway and if you win you get to advance a level.

but this way will make the sensei have like 20-30 more hp so its much harder to try it. plus if you fail you will actually die and lose money etc.

There's really no point in doing that. You can't beat your sensei so make him/her stronger & enable him/her to kill you on your second attempt? Where's the logic in that?

I like the things as they are now (btw. I once lost to a master twice in a row because of bad luck, so yeah, I was on a receiving end of this system as well)

No! One level per game day? I think not. There's sooooo many ways an A.S. can beat their master on the first try, no need to punish everyone.

no 1 master per game day. i usually gain  2 levels a game day. i'd go crazy if i could only get 1 a game day

it's only hard to beat your master sometimes if you are a student

It usually takes less then that if you know all the *secrets* 

1 master per day would be devistating....
